EYOTA
(ee-YOH-tah) — from the Dakota word meaning “superior” or “greatest.”
A railroad town turned commuter’s dream in the rolling bluff country of Southeast Minnesota — six city parks, Chester Woods at the edge of town, great schools, and an easy drive to Rochester.
About the Community
The Town the Railroad Built
Eyota was platted in the 1860s along the Winona & St. Peter Railroad, and the rails shaped everything about it. The original downtown was built on the south side of the street, facing a busy rail yard where daily trains departed for Chatfield and Plainview. Grain and cattle raised on the surrounding farms shipped out from the Eyota depot, and the line later became part of the Chicago & North Western Railway.
Today the trains have given way to Highway 14, and Eyota has grown into one of Olmsted County’s most desirable bedroom communities — a town of roughly 2,000 residents where kids bike to the ballfields, the farmers market sets up on Tuesday evenings, and downtown Rochester is a ten-mile straight shot west.
Whether you’re new to town, thinking about moving here, or a longtime resident looking for something to do this weekend, this page is your guide to everything Eyota.

Chester Woods County Park
Eyota’s backyard is one of the finest parks in Southeast Minnesota. Chester Woods covers 1,333 acres of oak woods, bluff prairie, native grassland, and savanna on the headwaters of Bear Creek — the dam that protects Rochester from flooding also created 118-acre Chester Lake, the centerpiece of the park.
Watch for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, bald eagles, and wood ducks — and best of all, the park is free to enter, year-round.

Six City Parks — and Then Some

Eyota’s largest park, between 2nd & 5th Street on the west side. Ballfields, picnic shelters with kitchens, playgrounds — and home of the Eyota Farmers Market, Tuesday evenings May through October.
Freedom Park
At 11 North Front Street NW & Center Avenue. Shelters, play equipment, and ballfields used for league games — a centerpiece for community events in the heart of town.
Bush’s Woodland Park
A quiet neighborhood park in the Bush addition at 1002 Bush Court SW — a natural green space that’s perfect for a morning walk or an afternoon outdoors.
Sunrise Park
At 118 Fourth Street SE, this east-side neighborhood gem puts green space and play areas within walking distance for nearby families.
Eyota Skate Park
A dedicated skate park where younger residents can practice skateboarding, BMX, and board sports in a safe community setting.
Disc Golf & Courts
A 12-basket disc golf course draws players of all skill levels — plus pickleball and basketball courts, volleyball, and biking and walking trails across the park system.
